About the Skyspace

Standing between the Shepherd School of Music and the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business on the Rice University campus, the James Turrell Skyspace will be visible from the surrounding Texas Medical Center and many neighboring high-rises. Accommodating almost 150 people, the interior space will provide seating for 44 people and is acoustically equipped for musical performances and laboratory space for music school students. The second level will have standing space for approximately 100 people. Constructed of grass, concrete, stone and composite steel, the pyramidlike structure is enhanced by an LED light show reflecting around the uncovered roof aperture, which will be open to the sky. Turrell’s composition of light complements the natural light present at sunrise and sunset, and it transforms the skyspace into a locale for contemplation and reflective interaction with the rest of the campus and the natural world.
